Munster MHC: Rebels put fancied Waterford to the sword
June 26, 2008
Cork cruised into another ESB Munster MHC final following an emphatic 16-point win over a much-fancied Waterford at Walsh Park last night.
Cork.....4-13
Waterford.1-6
Parading six of De La Salle's All-Ireland Colleges winning side, Waterford came into the game with high expectations but after holding their own in the first half, they were blown away by an impressive Cork outfit after the break.
Favoured by the wind in the first half, the Deise took the lead for the first time in the 18th minute when Maurice Shanahan - younger brother of senior star Dan - blasted the opening goal. Waterford weren't flattered to be ahead by four points as the half drew to a close, but then disaster struck when Cork midfielder Paul Honohan - now operating at full forward - found the net to leave the minimum between the sides at the interval, 1-4 to 1-3.
That score seemed to demoralise the home side who were completely overrun in the second period. The Rebels were level within 90 seconds of the restart through Honohan and then Mark Collins gave them a lead they would never relinquish.
Waterford remained in contention until the 48th minute when substitute Jamie Coughlan fired home a second Cork goal to put them six points clear. It was one-way traffic in the closing 10 minutes with further goals from Ciaran Sheehan and Coughlan easing Cork into the final against Tipperary.
