O'Flynn hat-trick knocks out Decies
February 15, 2007
A brilliant hat-trick of goals by Paul O'Flynn helped catapult Cork IT into the last eight of the Sigerson Cup on the back of an emphatic 3-15 to 1-7 win over Waterford IT at Curraheen Road.
Ballyclough native O'Flynn struck gold on three occasions in the first half to send the Waterford lads spinning out of the competition.
Waterford had the breeze at their backs in the first half and were two points clear before the would-be winners opened their account and then equalised by the end of the first quarter.
Wexford senior player PJ Banville edged Waterford back in front but then a goal from O'Flynn in the 19th minute served to turn the tide irrevocably in Cork's favour.
Banville did convert a penalty in the 28th minute to put the Waterford lads back on the frontfoot but only temporarily as matters developed.
On the stroke of half-time, Cork IT hit the jackpot once more with O'Flynn grabbing his second goal to leave his side ahead by 2-5 to 1-3 at the interval.
Waterford stuck to their task after the restart but were hit with a real sucker punch when Colm O'Neill and Daniel Goulding combined to put O'Flynn in for his hat-trick.
Cork proceeded to go for the jugular thereafter and points from O'Neill, Goulding and Roy Leahy served to put the icing on the cake.
