O'Connor handed Kerry debut

July 05, 2006
Kenmare teenager Paul O'Connor is a surprise inclusion in the Kerry attack for Sunday's Munster football final against old rivals Cork. O'Connor will make his championship debut at left corner forward and is one of two changes from the team that overcame Tipperary in the semi-final. The other change sees Mike McCarthy, who has recovered from a hand injury, returning to full back at the expense of Tom O'Sullivan. O'Connor's inclusion means there is no room up front for Eamon Fitzmaurice, Darren O'Sullivan or Mike Frank Russell. Kerry manager Jack O'Connor said he had picked his team on the basis of who was going well in training. "The training over the past two or three weeks has been exceptional. I see tremendous application and hunger among the players and that is always a good sign. "Whether that transmits itself into a winning formula or not, I don't know. I said after the Waterford game that I was not happy with the attitude, but since then the lads have been tremendous," he explained. Kerry (SF v Cork): D Murphy; A O'Mahony, M McCarthy, M O Se; T O Se, S Moynihan, M Lyons; D O Se, K Donaghy; P Galvin, D O'Sullivan, E Brosnan; C Cooper, B Sheehan, P O'Connor.
