Galway came through a battle with Monaghan in Salthill to book their place in the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland senior football championship.

It finished 0-14 to 0-11 at Pearse Stadium, where the fancied hosts made a slow start, losing star forward Shane Walsh to an ankle injury in the 25th minute for good measure, before eventually settling in.

Michael Banningan’s point had Monaghan ahead by 0-5 to 0-3 in the 31st minute, but unanswered scores from Robert Finnerty, Matthew Tierney (free) and Paul Conroy saw Padraic Joyce’s men carry in a one-point lead come half-time.

Jack McCarron squared the sides five minutes into the second-half and they’d be level twice more prior to Finnerty and John Maher moving the Connacht champions two clear.

A brace of Finnerty frees made it a four-point game with 12 minutes remaining and substitute Damien Comer would get on the scoresheet for the hosts after that by lashing over a superb point.

It left Monaghan with an uphill task to try and extend their season in the time that remained and, in the end, a couple of injury-time frees from Conor McManus would end up being consolation for the Farney men as Galway advanced into the last eight.
