Ballyhale Shamrocks rescued a draw from a thrilling contest against Tullaroan at Nowlan Park when Eoin Reid buried a late equalising goal.

TJ Reid showed his class in the closing stages to tee up his brother for the levelling score that denied Tullaroan a famous victory this evening.

The clash of the All-Ireland senior and intermediate hurling champions was the standout tie in the Kilkenny senior hurling opening round and it lived up to its billing.

Both sides were tied on 1-9 apiece at half time. A Bill Gaffney goal handed Tullaroan the early initiative but TJ Reid hit back by raising a green flag at the other end.

For Tullaroan, Tommy Walsh the younger was outstanding at full back as was his namesake Shane who led the scoring charge for the 2019 intermediate winners.

Ballyhale were dealt a blow by the loss of Kilkenny captain Colin Fennelly midway through the first-half while Darren Mullen was also forced off with injury.

In tonight's other first round matches in the Kilkenny SH, O’Loughlin Gaels defeated Bennettsbridge (1-18 to 1-14) and Clara overcame Graigue-Ballycallan, 1-21 to 0-16.
