It has been a proud few days for Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Club as the club's fundraiser in aid of Pieta House and Heroes Aid, exceeded all expectations. At 10.00 pm on Monday night the €10,000 barrier was passed. This was more than double what was initially hoped to raise. The original intention was to support the Do It For Dan Trust but as this fund had exceeded its designated target it was decided to support Pieta House and Heroes All.
The Mullingar Shamrocks family and Mullingar Shamrocks families responded in style in a wonderful expression of club community and walked, cycled and ran well in excess of 1500km. Friends and sometimes rivals of Shamrocks also chipped in and lent their support and we are grateful for this. The list of those who donated included some of the best known names in the word of Westmeath GAA.
The Mullingar Shamrocks community is global in extent and donations arrived from New York, Florida, California, Australia and Dubai. Former senior player, Seanie Daly was out early on Sunday morning in Hong Kong doing his 5km for the cause.
Families and individuals young and old were involved in the glorious sunshine of Sunday and proudly wore the club colours. Crucially participants donated generously and when the GoFundMe account was closed on Tuesday evening the fantastic sum of €10,449 had been donated by 335 contributors.
Mullingar Shamrocks forward Dean Moore bleached his hair blond!
The initiative for the event came from former Westmeath and DCU senior footballer and current club senior stalwart Kieran Gavin who was supported in the organisational logistics by assistant club secretary Ritchie Daly. Current club senior players Tye Adamson and Dean Moore boosted the donations at a crucial stage by offering to have their hair bleached provided the €7500 and €8000 barriers was exceeded. The input of Trinity College student Anna Jones, one of the stars of Mullingar Shamrocks and Westmeath LGF team is also worthy of recognition. Anna began her run on Sunday morning at 5.50 am and 3 hours 09 minutes and 19 seconds later had covered a distance of 31.55km, running at an average pace of 10km per hour.
Overall a great weekend for the club but more importantly for Pieta House and Heroes Aid who will benefit in equal measure from the initiative.
