GAA community urged to support 'Do It For Dan'

'Do It For Dan' is a fundraising drive for young Dan Donoher, son of former Laois footballers Niall and Aisling Donoher.

Former Laois footballers Niall and Aisling Donoher are appealing for the GAA community's help in raising funds for a life-saving drug for their young son, Dan.

Over €225,000 of a target of €2 million has been raised since the 'Do It For Dan' GoFundMe page was set up just three days ago. Little Dan, who will celebrate his first birthday on March 28, was diagnosed in December with a rare genetic neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1 and Scoliosis.

SMA is the progressive loss of motor neurons, which are the nerve cells that control muscle movement. Essentially, it is a muscle wasting disease. As Dan has the most severe type of SMA, this damages the muscles used for swallowing, speaking and breathing along with requiring ventilatory support.  Dan's muscles are too weak for a strong cough. As his cough is not strong enough, mucus can get trapped in the lungs which makes breathing more difficult for him. A common cold could end his life.

After learning of a pioneering drug that's only available in the US and costs $2.1 million, a fundraising committee was formed last month, headed by Aisling's brother and recently-retired Laois footballer Brendan Quigley. Brendan played alongside Niall on the Laois team that won the All-Ireland MFC title in 2003.
