Mayo county board have criticised the timing of their All-Ireland SFC qualifier against Down next Saturday week.

Speaking yesterday, Public Relations Officer Paul Cunnane described the 7pm throw-in time as “unfair”, with some fans from the Heather County facing an eight-hour round trip to Newry, and confirmed that an earlier time for the game was requested last Monday.

"We would be surprised and disappointed the game has been scheduled for 7pm when you consider the larger number of fans that go to Mayo games and particularly the large number of families and people with children," said Cunnane.

"We don't see why the game couldn't have been put on earlier in the day. In fact we sent an email to the CCCC (Central Competitions Control Committee) on Monday afternoon requesting a 3pm throw-in or as early as possible, so we were surprised when we got confirmation it was down for 7pm."
