Former Westmeath footballer and RTE GAA pundit Dessie Dolan has infuriated some in the county following comments about their chances in Leinster this year.
The matter of Dolan’s comments were raised at the most recent county board meeting where delegates felt the need to highlight the former Leinster SFC winner’s comments.
Dolan is quoted in the Westmeath Examiner as saying “Leinster is a write off. So a lot of the hard work has been done already. The success has been getting promoted.
“You’d like to win a couple of games in the championship, but we won’t beat Dublin so Leinster isn’t an option.”
Nonetheless, Coralstown/Kinnegad delegate Joe O’Keeffe said: “I was fierce disappointed that a man of his calibre would write such a negative piece.
“He said that we would go no further. I thought that was a bit disappointing and deflating after all the work we’ve done. We’re all on a high. Maybe we mightn’t go any further. But I’m looking at those lads out training and the work they’re putting in and I certainly won’t give them no hope.”
Westmeath chairman Billy Foley remarked: “Any individual in this world is entitled to say what he likes as long as they’re not damaging another human being. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
“But I have no doubt that our Westmeath football team can go further. It’s well within their capabilities. So let’s believe they can go further and drive it on.”
