A large crowd gathered at Pairc Ui Rinn tonight for the Kieran O'Connor benefit match between the Cork and Kilkenny senior hurlers.
It was the hosts that defeated the visitors by 1-27 to 0-23 but hurling and the scoreline didn't really matter as spectators turned out to support Cork's 2010 All-Ireland SFC medal winner Kieran and his family in his battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma, which is a rare form of bone cancer.
The sides were deadlocked at 0-16 apiece at the end of the first half in which Patrick Horgan scored seven points while Robbie O'Flynn netted the game's only goal for the Rebels on 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, TJ Reid made his first appearance of 2019 for Kilkenny as he returned from his All-Ireland winning club campaign with Ballyhale Shamrocks to captain the Cats.
The Cork SHC colleges/divisions clash between CIT and UCC acted as a curtain-raiser.
Less than a fortnight ago, a GoFundMe page was launched by Friends of Kieran to help with the costly treatment and their goal of €250,000 was reached within four days. The fundrasing page currently stands at over €310,000.
