'Rome wasn't built in a day'

Anthony Cunningham has reiterated his thoughts that it will take time to get Roscommon where he wants them to be.

Following a raft of retirements and withdrawals from the squad, the Rossies are going through a transitional period at the moment.

Cunningham has been chosen as the man to oversee this transition and the Galway native stressed to the Roscommon Herald that they need time to adapt.

Despite this, Roscommon have made a decent start to the year, winning the FBD League and narrowly losing to a strong Mayo side in Castlebar last Saturday night.

“To beat Galway and to come down here to Mayo and to run a team that should have won several All-Irelands in the last ten years to a point, you’d have to be very optimistic that we can improve,” said Cunningham.

“But, it’s only the players that can improve. We’ll help them along every day that we have them but everyone needs to be patient.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, and a young team coming through have to go through these nights here in Castlebar to learn.”
