A Glen Rovers motion calling for divisional teams to be barred from competing in the Cork senior championships was heavily defeated at Saturday's county convention.

Proposing the motion, Glen Rovers secretary Jude O'Callaghan insisted that it had nothing to do with Imokilly's recent dominance of the Cork SHC.

"We just want to level the playing field for club players," he is quoted as saying in the Irish Examiner.

"The club player has the option of playing in one championship. Those representing divisions have the luxury of playing in two championships. Is this far? Surely, this must be addressed."

However, Imokilly president Willie Ring hit back by saying: "If you want to get rid of divisional teams, this is not the way to do it. It should be done in manly combat, beating on the field of play and no other way."

A second motion from the city club to prevent third-level teams such as UCC and CIT from fielding players from clubs outside Cork also received litte support from delegates.
