Westmeath club on brink of ending long stay in intermediate

Not many clubs have spent 31 consecutive years in the intermediate grade.
But tomorrow Shandonagh will have a chance to finally break out of the 'middle' grade when they contest the Westmeath IFC final for the second year running. The club from the outskirts of Mullingar have been intermediate since winning JFC honours in 1987 - they haven't been promoted or relegated since.
Shandonagh have been the bridesmaids of the Westmeath IFC on many occasions and last year's surprise one-point defeat to St. Mary's, Rochfortbridge was an especially hard one to take. But after capturing the All-County League Division 2 title earlier this year and blitzing Milltown by 4-14 to 1-5 in the IFC semi-final, they look well placed to beat Milltownpass in tomorrow's final at TEG Cusack Park and attain senior status for the first time.
If they do - former county midfielder David Duffy is their captain - no-one in Westmeath will begrudge them.
