Ciaran Carey says the current Limerick squad is the strongest he has ever seen.

Speaking to the Irish Independent ahead of Sunday's All-Ireland SHC final, the Limerick legend is giving John Kiely's men every chance of ending their 45-year wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup at the expense of holders Galway.

"I'm not judging it on last year, all I am judging it on is the Limerick journey to the final and the Galway journey to the final and what I have seen from both teams from defence, the forward line, the power they have up front and both benches, I'm convinced more by Limerick, just how they got to the final," he stated.

"Clare had 19 wides (in their semi-final replay against Galway). If they converted a quarter of them they might have got there. Of course Galway are so capable of upping it and delivering a massive hour or more of hurling. If that doesn't happen, I give Limerick a great chance.

"I said it at the start of the year before they even hit a ball in championship hurling, it is the best Limerick squad I have seen in my time. A lot of people are asking me am I surprised that they got there, certainly I'm not.

"My only concern at the start of the year was if these guys were going to be looked after and managed right and John Kiely and his backroom team have more than done that."
