Wexford SHC: Kirwan leads Oulart to glory
October 12, 2009
Oulart-The-Ballagh captain Paul Roche raises the Cup
Oulart-the-Ballagh 3-12
Buffers Alley 1-13
A remarkable 3-4 tally from Nicky Kirwan led Oulart-the-Ballagh to this year's Wexford senior hurling championship crown after they edged out Buffers Alley at Wexford Park yesterday afternoon.
Kirwan's third goal proved his most vital as it sent Oulart into a five-point lead in injury-time just when it looked as though Buffers Alley were to pull off a magnificent comeback and get their hands on the title.
It took the would-be winners just 30 seconds to signal their intent in this decider, when their lethal corner-forward pierced Alley's defence and blasted to the net to gift his team a dream start. They would register three points before Alley got off the mark when Sean Og Whelan raised a white flag down the other end, and that pattern continued throughout the half, which sent Oulart into a 1-10 to 0-4 lead at the interval.
Four minutes into the restart and Kirwan had bagged his second major, when David Redmond's stinging-shot was blocked by 'keeper Seamus Kavanagh and feel to Kirwan who pounced for another goal.
At that Alley looked dead and buried, but to their credit they never threw in the towel and came to life when Tomas O'Leary landed two massive points in quick succession. Pat Doran and O'Leary again tagged on more singles, before Doran smashed to the net.
A point each from Doran and O'Leary meant the scores were at 2-11 to 1-12 with five minutes remaining, in which time Darren and Nolan exchanged points, but Kirwan ensured that he'd be grabbing the headlines with another crucial goal on the hour.
