Waterford SHC: Flynn rescues replay for Ballygunner
October 12, 2009
Ballygunner 4-12
Lismore 2-18
An injury-time free from Paul Flynn earned Ballygunner a second shot at this year's Waterford senior hurling championship crown after they finished all square with Lismore at Walsh Park yesterday afternoon.
'The Gunners' looked to be on their way to defeat as they trailed their opponents, inspired by Maurice Shanahan, brother of Dan, by 2-9 to 1-6 at the break, with Lismore's goals coming from Stephen O'Keeffe and Padraig Prendergast.
Flynn's well-struck penalty just before the break provided Ballygunner with a much needed life-line for the second-half, and just a minute into the restart Gearoid O'Connor ignited this encounter with a rasping shot which flew to the back of the Lismore net.
Flynn played Pauric Mahony through for a third soon after, while Maurice Shanahan looked to steer Lismore out of trouble with more accurate points, but it seemed like nothing could stop Ballygunner as Shane O'Sullivan levelled coming into the last quarter with his team's fourth and final major.
After that it was a question of nerves, as Shanahan rounded off his 11-point tally with three overs - two from frees - and O'Sullivan and two coolly-taken Flynn frees meant these two sides would be meeting again next Sunday at the same venue to again try and deicide the 2009 Waterford SHC champions.
