Byrne, Malachy

The Late Malachy Byrne The Glenealy club was saddened to hear of the recent death of Malachy Byrne. Malachy was a brave uncompromising player who was seldom beaten for a ball. Along with his brother Paudie who was another great hurler he was part of a great Glenealy team in the late 50's that won three Championship in a row 57,58,59. In the 57 final against Avondale, Mal scored the winning goal, incidentally Mal's other brother Gerry, no mean hurler himself, was the secretary of the club during this successful period. After he retired from playing Mal always took an active interest in the Club and was a Senior selector at times in the 70s and 80s. Though in ill health for some years Mall still displayed all the fighting qualities he showed as a player and he made a point of attending the Clubs 50th anniversary celebrations of winning their first Senior Championship in the Grand Hotel last year. To Mal's two brothers Paudie and Gerry and his extended family the extends its deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Wicklow People 20th February 2008
