Fleming, Tony

December 28, 2006
The late Tony Fleming Aughrim lost one of its most popular figures with the sudden passing of GAA stalwart Tony Fleming on Saturday, December 16th 2006. Tony, who died peacefully in his sleep, will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Betty, and children, Tony and Liz, and a very wide circle of relatives and friends. He was an institution in Aughrim, where he lived for the past 25 years. Originally a taxi driver in Dublin, he began a similar business when he moved to the town. In latter years, he worked as a stonemason, developing a reputation for beautiful, high quality workmanship. He was still hard at work right up until his tragic passing. Apart from his family, Tony's whole life was the GAA. He played football for Aughrim and Ballincor and was chairman of the Aughrim Club for many years. On the night before his death he had attended the AGM of the club and was appointed to the committee for another year. He will be badly missed by the Co. Board in Aughrim on match days where he was always available to so what ever job that needed to be done. Away from the GAA, he helped start the Aughrim Golf Society and the town's fundraising lotto scheme, and was a tireless worker for the Aughrim Tidy Towns over the years. A very large crowd attended Tony's funeral service at Aughrim Sacred Heart Church and he was laid to rest at Macreddin Cemetery on Tuesday, December 19, 2006. May he rest in peace.
