Byrne, Liam

December 14, 2006
The late Liam Byrne Arklow and surrounding districts were very saddened to learn of the untimely death in October, 2006 of Liam Byrne, a local sporting legend and one of the great characters of the town. Liam was born in Mellows Avenue and was a qualified butcher, a trade he excelled at for many years. He was a great lover of all sports throughout his life, playing hurling and gaelic football for Arklow Gerladines and amassed a vast array of medals and trophies throughout his playing career. He won a county minor championship with the club and was very proud to have represented the county team in Croke Park. Amongst his other sporting achievements was winning the McElheron Cup (pitch and putt) in 1980. He also won many prizes playing darts, snooker and pool. Coming from a very musical family, Liam was a lovely singer and was a member of the Arklow Male Voice Choir for a number of years. Liam later joined Arklow Golf Club, where he became a very accomplished golfer. He was a member of the winning Brennan cup side in 1998 and was a highly valued committee member and competition secretary for many years. Liam's work with the club brought him in contact with many golfers, all of whom have very fond memories of his wit and good humour. Golf was Liam's greatest love and he travelled all over the country to play, making many friends along the way. Liam travelled to Lourdes in 2005 with the Castletown Lourdes group. When they returned home, he organised a golf classic to raise funds for the group and was very proud that the venture was an outstanding success. This fundraiser will be carried on annually in Liam's memory. Liam will be sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Ann, his daughter Caithriona, sons Leonard and Niall, son-in-law Kevin and a large circle of family and friends. May he rest in peace. Our Lady of Lourdes pray for him. Courtesy of The Wicklow People 14 December 2006
