O'Sullivan, Sean

October 26, 2006
The late Sean O'Sullivan Cumann na mBunscol is mourning the unexpected death of one of its founding fathers, Sean O'Sullivan. Sean, was along with Pat Daye, founded Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantain. He was involved in gaelic games in wicklow for over 40 years and his death came as a shock to all those who knew him. In his youth Sean was a talented hurler, captaining the Clare minor hurling team as well as representing his native county as senior level. Born in Kilkee and raised in Killaloe, Sean maintained a passionate interest in the fortunes of Clare throughout the years. In 1958 Sean's teaching career began in Monaseed N.S. in Co. Wexford. While there, he met his beloved wife Kathleen, who was teaching in Carnew N.S. at the time. Sean won a county hurling title with Carnew, while living in the area. In 1962 Sean and Kathleen moved to Valleymount parish after taking up teaching positions in Lacken N.S. In1965 they moved across the lake, where they spent thirty-five happy and productive years in their beloved Valleymount National School. Sean was highly regarded in GAA circles both inside and outside the Garden County. As a player of Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantain, he was very proud of the progress and development which the organisation had made. Sean was also highly regarded as a national figure in Cumann na mBunscol Laighean. Sean was a kind, gentle and unassuming person, whose work as a teacher impacted positively on the lives of all those with whom he came into contact. He had a great love of nature and an encyclopedic knowledge of the environment. He was keenly interested in music and drama, and there were many fun filled evenings with local dramatic productions. Without the pioneering work of Sean and his good friend Pat Daye, Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantain wouldn't be as successful as it is today. Sean truly believed in the ethos of participation and, because of his work, thousands of children have been introduced to gaelic games. We have lost a great friend and a true gentleman. To his wife Kathleen, sons Aidan and Sean, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and wide circle of friends, we offer our deepest sympathy. Ni bheidh a leitheid ann aris.
