Murphy, Jack

The late Jack Murphy The passing of Jack Murphy from Slievemeel had caused much regret in the Askinagap area where he was well known as a strong contributor to the life of the community. A former forestry worker, Jack died suddenly at the age of 64, to the great grief of his wife Alice and their family. He will be remembered in part as a Gaelic Footballer, a stalwart member of the junior A side that reached a county final in 1972. After his playing days, he was a selector with the team that actually won the junior A title in 1980 and he always knocked great craic out of the games. He lived to see all three of his sons line out in the Ballymanus colours. His influence spread far beyond the football field, however, and his sense of humour was appreciated throughout all spheres of local life. Jack Murphy was particularly associated with the development of the old school in Askinagap as a community hall and he served as treasurer of the hall committee up to the time of his death. The deceased is mourned by his wife Alice (nee Kavanagh); daughters Martina, Leonora. Maura and Aine; sons Oliver, Donal and Sean; other relative and many friends.
