Molloy, Martin

January 12, 2006
The late Martin Molloy Martin Molloy from Tomacork, Carnew, who died at the age of 71 years, was one of the finest footballers from the border village ever to grace the playing fields of this county. Martin played for both club and county in his younger days, he was a tower of strength to his team in the full-back position, and he had many medals to show for his football skills. His sons the late Billy, who died over seven years ago, Martin, Joe and Maurice all played the game of hurling with distinction for Carnew, but it was the 'big ball' that was their father's love. With his wife Kathleen, he reared a family of nine - their five daughters are Margaret, Kitty, May, Liz and Ann - and deepest sympathy is extended to them in their sad loss. While he had a small few acres of land, Martin worked as a labourer with local farmers and he spent close on 20 years working in the NET fertiliser factory in Arklow. In the last 15 years or so Martin did not always enjoy the best of health but he loved his garden. Apart from his football, he was a family man first and foremost, and devoted his life to his wife Kathleen and his children. He was always there for them and in latter years he doted on his 23 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His remains were interred in Tomacork Cemetery on Friday last, January 6, after Requiem Mass celebrant by Fr Martin Casey PP. Players and members of the Carnew Emmets Club provided a guard of honour at his funeral. Courtesy of Wicklow People 12 January 2006
