Doyle, Andrew

Death of well known GAA Supporter

The village of Grangecon and the County Wicklow GAA community has been saddened by the death of popular Andrew Doyle, who tragically drowned while on holiday in Spain.

Aged in his 70s, the late Mr Doyle spent most of his life in London after emigrating there in the 1950s, before setting up and running a successful construction company. He visited home regularly in the years that followed however and he was particularly well known in Gaa circles. He never missed a match when Wicklow played in London, while he often attended the County Grounds in Aughrim too, whenever Wicklow had a match while he was home.

His association with Gaelic Games was strengthened last year when he sponsored the county ladies minor football team. Mr. Doyle also attended numerous London Wicklow Association dinner dances held annually at the Irish Centre in London and was very much past of the local Irish community living there. Tragically, his 21 year old grandnephew, Nigel Keogh of Baltinglass, drowned while on Holiday in Alicante, Spain in 2007 with his girlfriend. Funeral arrangements have yet to be put in place though it is believed Mr. Doyle will be buried in London, alongside his wife, Mary (Fogarty) of Baltinglass. Mr. Doyle played a major role in the construction of the County Grounds in Aughrim. He was also involved in horse racing and spent plenty of time each year in Spain.
