Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney Club Notes

March 19, 2010
Victories all round for the club's teams playing last Saturday with the senior men's team and the junior ladies winning their games. The men's senior team were in action away from home against a promoted Dunlavin side in Division 1 on Saturday evening. They secured a victory beating Dunlavin 2-10 to 1-12. Arklow started impressively with a score within a minute, and pushed on to a 1-03 to 0-02 points lead after 15 minutes after a well taken goal by Niall Mullet. Arklow forwards were on top at this stage with Stephen Hurley and Mullet looking sharp. However Dunlavin upped the tempo around the middle of the park and came back into the contest after some fine hand passing moves. The teams exchanged points with AGB taking a slender lead at half time 1-05 to 0-06.

The second half started with Dunlavin on top, levelling early on and taking the lead for the first time with 40mins gone on the clock. Yet AGB dug deep against an improved Dunlavin defence and grabbed the lead back with a quality goal from Andy Brennan. Dunlavin were not lying down and got a breakaway goal with only minutes left on the clock to gain back the lead. However AGB rallied again with a great levelling point from Paul O'Donoghue and impressive D O'Keeffe slotting over a last minute winner for the seasiders. Apart from the scorers there were good performances defensively from Alan Byrne and Mark Ivanoff. Team: J Bolger, J Tyrrell, P Egan, A McBride, D O'Keeffe (0-2), P O'Donoghue (0-1), M Ivanoff, D Hurley, G Murphy, P Ivanoff, P. Gleeson (0-1), I Hurley, S Hurley (0-3), N Mullet (1-2), A Brennan (1-1). Subs: A Byrne, D Redmond, A Minogue, D O' Harte. Men's team training is on in Ballymoney @ 7:30 Tuesday and Thursdays from now on. This Wednesday's 5km Fun Run is also team training, meet at 10:45 in Pearse Park.

Second game of the season for the junior ladies team and a second win as well. The ladies beat Kilcoole, tallying over a very impressive scoreline beating them 6-14 to 1-5 on Saturday afternoon. There were some great performances; Mairead Hurley, Jessica Hurley and Danni Brauders had a great game. Great win! Training for the ladies teams is on Tuesdays 8-9.30pm and Fridays 8-9.30pm.

The Academy, for boys and girls aged 6 & 7, is running every Sunday morning at 10 am with a great turn out, lots of fun and activities; they will be leading out AGB Juveniles in this year's St Patrick's Day Parade.

Under 9 Boys With the Go Games Series starting shortly it's great to see such large numbers turning up every Friday evening at 6.20 learning new skills, and develop existing ones. Last week was particularly good, as their discipline is improving and they really are getting the hang of the shoulder tackle. We would like to mention three young players who have been putting a lot of effort in recently and are showing the benefit of that, they are Matt Forde, Caimin Kavanagh and Donnacha Bracken keep up the good work lads.

Under13 Boys completed their 6 week programme with the County Development Squad and were honoured to represent AGB by showing off their skills during half time of the Wicklow V Carlow National league game; they also had a meet and greet session with Micko and some of their personal hero's. The eight players who dedicated their time over the past 6 weeks were: Adam Forde, Jay Wolohan, Darren Dempsey, Jack Hamilton, John O'Halloran, Eoghan Doyle, Christopher O'Brien & Patrick Salley. Well done to one and all.

Under 14Boys continued their training last week with the finalised squad to be named on March the 19th, for this prestigious competition, details will be text to parents as soon as they are confirmed. Our first Challenge game is provisionally booked for Friday 19th away to "The Starlights" Enniscorthy. The boys had an interesting fitness session on Friday last with Fitness Expert Vicky Gaffney putting the boys through their paces; they spent an hour of intensive training with Vicky followed by half an hour of football, so it was a tired bunch of boys who left Pearse Park on Friday evening. All players who wish to be included in squad must attend training on Friday or contact one of the coaches if unavailable on Friday.
