While in many counties there are a shortage of referees, Wicklow have been faced with the issue of a lack of umpires for championship games.

Last weekend, there was a round of senior hurling championship games and it was noted that at the majority of games there was only one or two official umpires in attendance.

The Wicklow People reports that there are a number of reasons for referees being unable to get umpires for championship games and these include the fear of being verbally and physically abused.

Wicklow GAA did in the past give umpires match passes, but stopped that a few years back when they alleged that the passes were being abused.

However, they are now looking at another system in order to attract people back to doing the role which is so important at games.
