The Late Lar Cummins
A true gentleman, Lar Cummins was a great family man with a big community spirit.
At the age of 72 he passed on December 29 after falling ill on Christmas eve. He was removed from his home in Ballymurn on December 30 for funeral mass the following day with burial afterwards in Ballymurn cemetery.
He was a son of Jim and Julia Cummins of Ballylucas, the middle child of five children and is survived by his two sisters and two brothers, Jamie, Bill, Lily and Eileen Barlow.
An avid GAA supporter Lar was the nephew of the great Wexford hurler MIck Cummins who was part of the Wexford All Ireland team of 1910.
He was reared in Ballylucas and it was here where he met his beloved wife of 48 years, his next door neighbour, the late Mary nee O'Connor. The couple had eleven children Jimmy (US), Feile, Julie Banville, John, Walter (Kildare), Anne Healy (Louth), Martin, Michael, Liam and the late Margaret Cummins and Catherine Murray.
When the couple married they moved Waterford but moved back to Wexford in 1966 and lived in Curracloe where he was employed with North Slob in Wexford. The couple moved back to Ballymurn in the mid 1970's. He continued to work with North Slob until he was laid off in 1985. From then until his retirement a few years ago he farmed at home in Ballymurn.
Lar was strongly involved in Ballymurn/Croosabeg GAA and was chairman of the club for many years. He was a selector at underage and adult level up until the time of his passing. He was awarded the Wexford district award in 2001 and the Seana Gael a year ago.
Lar was the chairman of the local hall committee for twenty years up until the time of his passing and chairman of the local Fine Gael committee for a number of years.
He had great community spirit and called the bingo in the local hall every Monday night for the past 20 years and was involved in the establishment of the first FAS committee in Ballymurn. Though quiet in nature he was always quick with a helping hand for the community. He had 18 grandchildren and his family did the readings and gifts at his funeral. The pioneers and hall committee held a guard of honour at his removal from his home and the GAA did the honour the following day as he was brought to his final resting place.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him but in particular by his loving children, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers, sisters, sister-in-law, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
