The late Paddy White The unexpected death of the late Paddy White, Bridstown, Our Lady's Island, at Wexford General Hospital shocked the entire south east corner of Wexford where he was held in very high esteem. Aged 63, Paddy in his youth served with he Irish Guards in Germany, was an outstanding goal-keeper with Our Lady's Island football team until an accident cut short his football career. He possessed a good singing voice. Affectionately known as 'Ber', he is survived by his six sisters Patricia, Maureen, Peg, Joan, Kathleen and Johanna. His remains were removed from Mulligan's Funeral Home to Our Lady's Island Church where they were received by V Rev. Colm C Murphy, Adm. His funeral was the largest seen for some time and testified the esteem in which Ber was held. Rev. Colm Murphy, Adm. paid a very moving tribute to Paddy, recalling his days with the Irish Guards, Stena Line and the local football team. He extended the sympathy of the parish to his sisters and family. The readings were taken by his two nieces, Helen O'Brien and Catherine Walsh, with prayers of the Faithful by Willie Ennis and Paula Sanders. The gifts were taken to the altar by his sisters. The Church choir sang beautifully during Mass. As the coffin was carried from the Church, Paddy Scallan sang one of Ber's favourite songs, "The Candy Store on the Corner'. Leo Carthy, President of the Island GAA club placed a jersey on the coffin, as players, past and present, formed a guard of honour. Fr Murphy officiated at the graveside and large crowd heard Leo Carthy, recall his life of a great character who loved the simple things in life, his life with the Irish Guards and his service to local GAA. His quick wit and humour made him dear to all who knew him. 'We shall not hear his favourite song 'Mona Lisa' again but he has left us great memories.' He extended sympathy to the White family and his dear friend Pat Gillies and hoped this gentle soul will rest in peace. Courtesy of the Wexford People 30 May 2007
