Murphy, Thomas

July 05, 2006
The late Thomas Murphy Mr Thomas Murphy of Croke Avenue, who died was an outstanding footballer, playing with the Wexford County team and winning two Senior medals with St John's volunteers. Mr Murphy who was 84 years old, died at Wexford Funeral Hospital on May 23rd, 2006, following a long illness. He is survived by his sons and daughters, Jane, Thomas, Tony, Marian, Carol, Mandy and Billy; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and many friends. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Joanie on February 13, 2006. Thomas was a loyal member of the outdoor staff of Wexford Borough Council, based at St Ibar's Cemetery in Crosstown for most of his working life. In his younger years, he was a footballer of a vote who became a local legend while playing with the All-Blacks in the 1940's when he leapt over the crossbar to stop a score. He played football for Wexford and lined out for many years with St John's Volunteers with whom he won two senior medals in 1953 and 1956. A fit and energetic man, Thomas was still playing football at the age of 56 years. He always loved dogs, particularly Alsatations and kept them throughout his life. During his retirement he liked to spend time in his garden. He had a great sense of humour and if you were in his company, you always had a good laugh. Thomas was always able to see the funny side of life. Burial took place in ST Ibar's Cemetery after Requiem Mass in Rowe Street Church where the volunteers formed a guard of honour as the coffin left the church. It was fitting, low-key final tribute to an accomplished sportsman whose achievements will go down in local GAA history. Courtesy of the Wexford People 05 July 2006
