Goodison, Francis

July 31, 2003
The late Francis Goodison Wexford lost one of it's great gaels with the death of Francis Goodison, from Waterloo Road. Francis was one of the great Goodison sporting dynasty and a brother of the late Willie Goodison, who represented Wexford at county and provincial level. Husband to Mary, and the father of three children, Francis was predominantly a family man, who put the care of those close to him as the ultimate priority in his life. However, one of his great passions in life was Gaelic Games, and as a young man he showed tremendous prowess on the sporting field. He played with the Sarsfield at both junior and minor level, going with them to the minor county final in 1953. However, his main sporting involvement was with the Volunteers, starting out a career with them in the minor Street League in 1951. He won the senior football county championship with the Vols in 1956. He also was exceptional on the hurling field and won a minor title with the Harriers in 1954. He went on to represent Wexford in both minor hurling and football. A talented boxer, he was also the Leinster juvenile boxing champion, representing St Michael's Boys Club. Francis' involvement with the GAA was recognised recently when he won the Wexford District GAA Appreciation Award. Francis was also a very devote Catholic all his life, attending Mass daily, and often making a second visit to the church in the afternoons to make his own private devotions. A 'nice fellows' with a quite and easy going manner, he will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Angela, Mark and Derek; sister Mary (Sparrow); brothers Paddy, John, Leo, Josie and Tommy, relatives and many friends.
