Adamstown native Pat Walshe had passed away in England People in Adamstown were saddened to hear of the death of Patrick Walshe. A native of Carrigbyrne, Pat, aged 91, passed away peacefully in Broadstairs, Kent, England. Pat was the seventh of twelve children, eight boys and four girls, and he attended Carrigbyrne National SChool, the New Ross CBS and Good Counsel Colleague. A man of many interest he was very involved in sport in his younger days, particularly hurling, football and athletics. Pat was a very successful athlete, winning many local and county honours. He played hurling with the Raheen Heartbreakers in the mid-1930s and in the late 1930s, while working in St. Senan's, he played Junior Hurling with the Starlights in Enniscorthy, helping to revive hurling in that area. A talented hurler he later won Senior County Championships in 1941 and '42 with great Adamstown team that dominated that era. Pat had a great love for working with wood and in his teens he picked up the craft of cabinet making. After leaving Good Counsel College his first job was at St. Senan's in Enniscorthy, where he studied for a Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. In the mid-1940s he emigrated to England where he worked in Botley's Park Mental Hospital in Surrey. As well as having a qualification in occupational therapy, Pat was a master of a number of crafts, including macrame, weaving, basketry, leather craft and cabinet making. Later in life he spent a number of years in Ghana where he became Head Occupational Therapist at Accra Mental Hospital. In the 1960s Pat returned to England was appointed Head of the first boarding school for mentally handicapped children and adults at Stone Bay in Broadstairs. Pat also continued to develop his own potential throughout his life and after he retired he went back to study and graduated with a Degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Kent. His Requiem Mass and burial took place in Broadstairs. Pat is survived by his brother Tony, sister Theresa and two daughters. RIP Courtesy of the Wexford People 26 October 2005
