Mernagh, Pa

February 08, 2006
The late Pa Mernagh Following a tragic accident on the Wexford Road, the Rapparees/Starlights GAA club lost on of its brightest and most talented young stars. Pa Mernagh was one of our most gifted and most promising dual players. At just 20 years old, Pa was recognised by all in the club as a shining light for the future; his skill and style in both hurling and football caused him to stand out from a very young age. Of slight build, Pa had pace, was quick to turn and leave a marker, and was deadly accurate anywhere in the vicinity of the goals. This was a guy who had it all - he was fleet of foot, had a keen eye and was a stylish shooter. He was a joy to watch and an honour to play with. Off the field, Pa was respected and liked by all his team-mates and clubmen. His death had left a huge void in many their lives and has cast a long shadow over the club, but we like to think that in his short life he achieved a lot - he made so many friends, he found love, he became a dad, he made his parents and family really proud of him in many ways. He donned the purple and gold jersey for his county and he won two Under-21 football titles, one Under-21 hurling title and two Senior football titles with the club - these are accolades that some never achieve. Pa, you packed a lot into your 20 years; we are glad to have known you, we were honoured to call you a clubman, and you will always be loved and remembered at Bellefield. Ar dheis De fo raibh a anam.
