Hurling hero Martin Flood laid to rest Sporting circles are in mourning following the loss of hurling hero Martin Flood of Castleboro, Cloughbawn. At the age of 83 Martin passed away peacefully on Saturday and his funeral was held in Cloughbawn. The local hurling team and surviving members of the county Senior team of the 1950s, of which he was a part, held a guard of honour as the sporting legend was brought to his final resting place. Matin was married to Eileen Morrissey of Camross and they had six children, three boys and three girls, Ger Paul, Murt, Nora, Catherine and Jane. He had one brother Tim, the famous inter-county hurler, and two sisters Ita and Nelly. Martin or Murt as he was fondly known, won his first Senior county medal with Cloughbawn in 1949. He captained Wexford in the Lenister Championship the following year and continue to play for the county throughout the early 1950s. In 1951 the centre field player won his second Senior county medal with Cloughbawn. The passion for hurling was passed to his three sons, all of whom played for Cloughbawn, and his grandson Ger who today is on the Senior panel. His wife Eileen was too a talented sportsperson in her day and played inter-county camogie. In his later days Martin was chairman of Waterford Co-Op now Ganbia. He was one of the major players in securing the Gain Milling contracts coming to Clonroche and was involved with many aspects of the community. He was the chairman of the Enniscorthy Show Society for many years and retired only last year. He was a committee member of the All-Ireland College of Showjumping and vice chairman of Clonroche Gymkhana. Martin continued to be very active until the last couple of months of his life. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him in particular his family, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Courtesy of Wexford People 21 December 2005
