Martin Storey has announced his retirement from intercounty hurling at the age of 36, leading to speculation that he will take over the manager's role in the county. The Oulart-the-Ballagh clubman gave 15 years of unintrerrupted service to the county since his debut against Kilkenny in 1986, making 31 appearances in the famous Purple and Gold. The undisputed highlight of his career was captaining Wexford to All-Ireland senior glory in 1996, the first time the county had claimed the title in 28 years. Storey gained recognition from all quarters for his performances throughout his career, combining a high level of skill with astonishing commitment in his regular centre forward berth. He won three All Star awards in an illustrious career, in '93, '96 and '98. The announcement comes at a time when Wexford hurling is in disarray, two heavy championship defeats in the past two years being followed by the departures of Rory Kinsella and Joachim Kelly. Now, with the manager's post proving a hard one to fill for the County Board, Storey will inevitably be linked to the job, although it is doubtful whether he will be prepared to go into management without a prior break from the game.
