Liam Dunne has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling, just when it seemed he was about to commit himself to Wexford for another year. The veteran half back holidayed with the Wexford team in San Francisco recently and then linked up with the All-Stars in Arizona. He had met with Wexford manager John Conran who was anxious that he remained involved for the coming year. But Dunne has now decided to call time on a glittering inter-county career which spanned over 15 years. He made his championship debut against Laois in 1988 and was a mainstay of the Wexford defence since then. He won an All-Ireland medal in 1996 when the Slaneysiders defeated Limerick in the final and also garnered three All-Star awards in 1990, '93 and '96. The fact that Dunne had one of his best ever seasons last year will make his decision all the more difficult for Wexford supporters to accept. Tweet
