Taghmon GAA president Paddy Fanning had a passion for horse breeding

There was a huge turnout at the funeral mass and burial of Paddy Fanning on Tuesday December 18, 2012, in St Fintan's Church and Cemetery in Taghmon. Paddy passed away at the age of 81 on Sunday December 16 following a short illness.

Paddy, from Raheen, Foulksmills, was a lifelong farmer. While he specialised in dairy farming, horses were his true passion. He bred many winners both in Ireland and the UK, and regularly attended point-to-point and race meetings.

Another passion in Paddy's life was sport. He played both hurling and football with St Munn's, winning one junior and three senior county titles with them in the 1950s.

When he retired from the field of play, he became involved with the training and management of his beloved Taghmon/Camross. He was also heavily involved with various developments of the club facilities, and in recognition of his work and commitment, he was appointed Club President, a position which he held until his death.

His love of GAA was evident in the amount of games he travelled to, both locally and nationally. In his younger days Paddy was also a cross country runner and he participated in many competitions along with his brothers.

Sadly, Paddy's health started to deteriorate at the end of October last year. He spent the last 3 weeks of his life at home in Raheen, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, his daughter Brid, his grandson Paudge, nephew Paul and his family, his brothers Sonny, Larry, Sean and Jimmy and sisters Mary and Nancy, as well as a wide circle of friends. He was sadly predeceased by his granddaughter Maria, 3 years ago.
