Thirteen still in football championship race

July 19, 2011
The GAA Football Provincial Championships have been completed and now the battle to join the four winners in the GAA Football All-Ireland Quarter-finals gathers pace.

Three of the quarter-finalists (from the qualifiers) will be decided next Saturday while the fourth will be decided on the following weekend when the winners of Armagh-Tyrone take on Roscommon.

The thirteen counties still in All-Ireland contention are:
Ulster: Donegal, Derry, Armagh, Tyrone, Down.
Leinster: Dublin, Kildare, Wexford.
Munster: Kerry, Cork, Limerick.
Connacht: Mayo, Roscommon

Next Saturday's fixtures are as follows:
GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Qualifiers
Round 4: Derry v Kildare, 4.00pm; Cork v Down, 6.00pm. Both in Croke Park
Limerick v Wexford, Portlaoise, 7.00pm
Round 3: Tyrone v Armagh, Omagh, 7.00pm

CORK v DOWN
2011 Championship
Cork 5-17 Waterford 2-8; Kerry 1-15 Cork 1-12.
Armagh 1-15 Down 1-10; Down 1-13 Clare 1-12; Down 1-16 Leitrim 1-8; Down 3-13 Antrim 0-10.

A re-run of last year's All-Ireland final which Cork won by a point (0-16 to 0-15). That was only their second meeting in championship history, having first met in the 1994 All-Ireland semi-final when Down won by 1-13 to 0-11.

Last year's All-Ireland final provided a fascinating encounter where fortunes swayed from side to side before Cork finally edged home by a point. Down led by 0-7 to 0-2 after 27 minutes but Cork fought back and were three points clear after 68 minutes before Down pulled two back. Daniel Goulding (0-9) and Donncha O'Connor (0-5) were Cork's top scorers while Martin Clarke (0-3), Danny Hughes (0-3) and Paul McComiskey (0-3) were Down's leading marksmen.

DERRY v KILDARE
2011 Championship
Derry 1-18 Fermanagh 1-10; Derry 3-14 Armagh 1-11; Donegal 1-11 Derry 0-8.
Kildare 0-12 Wicklow 0-5; Kildare 0-16 Meath 0-10; Dublin 1-12 Kildare 1-11;
Kildare 3-16 Laois 0-10; Kildare 2-11 Meath 0-14.

They meet for the second year in the qualifiers, having clashed in Round 3 last year, where Kildare won by 2-17 to 1-9 in Celtic Park. They also met in the 2006 qualifiers when Derry won by 1-17 to 0-10 in a Round 2 clash in Celtic Park.

Kildare will be having their 6th championship outing of the season and are bidding to reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals for a fourth successive year. So far, Kildare have played all Leinster opposition, three at provincial level, followed by Laois and Meath in the qualifiers.
Derry, whose Ulster championship bid ended last Sunday with a defeat by Donegal in the final, are bidding to reach the All-Ireland quarter-final for the first time since 2007.

They met in the Allianz Football League (Division 3) last April when Limerick won by 2-12 to 0-14 in Newcastlewest. Goals by Ger Collins and Seanie Buckley gave Limerick the edge in a game where Wexford had to play with 14 men for 45 minutes after midfielder, Daithi Waters was sent off on a second yellow card.

The two counties who shared between them all the Ulster titles in the 1999- 2010 era resume rivalry in the qualifiers with the winners advancing to a fourth round clash with Roscommon on Saturday week.

Tyrone v Armagh provided several outstanding battles throughout the last decade and are now poised to deliver another fascinating contest as they attempt to keep their All-Ireland ambitions alive. Tyrone won the last two championship clashes in 2009 and 2005, although Armagh also won once in 2005 while there was also a draw between them in a season where they met three times.
