Handball champ Thomas loved the great outdoors

Thomas O'Dowd loved the great outdoors.
The Murrintown man enjoyed getting out with the dogs for long country walks, or pottering round a farmyard. He enjoyed simple pleasures, and a healthy lifestyle.
Thomas sadly passed away at his home on Thursday. He was 74 years of age.
Originally from Kilmannon, Cleariestown, Thomas lived with his wife and family at Redshire Road, Murrintown.
He was employed with Teagasc in Johnstown Castle and happily worked on the farm there for 35 years.
Married to Bridie he was father to two children, Terry and Eleanor.
In his youth, Thomas was one of Wexford's finest sportsmen and in 1963 he won an All-Ireland handball championship.
He was passionate about handball and was one of the best exponents of the sport throughout the 1950's and 1960's. Indeed he held several county and Leinster championships throughout this time.
He also loved GAA and followed the St. Anne's and St. Martin's sides. He was also a great supporter of the Wexford hurling team.
He had two dogs, a cross breed terrier and a Springer spaniel, and every day he would walk several miles with his beloved pets.
He was a very quite man in many regards, but he was also sociable and enjoyed a bit of craic and banter.
He is survived by his wife, Bridie; his son, Terry; daughter; Eleanor; daughter-in-law, Marion; relatives and many friends.
His remains were interred in Murrintown Cemetery on Sunday following 11 a.m. Requiem Mass in Murrintown Parish Church.
