The Tom Lyng

The death of Tom Lyng at quite a young age shocked and saddened his many friends throughout Wicklow.
A Kilkenny man, Tom spent most of his working life in Wicklow, married a Wicklow girl and together they reared their family in Newcastle.
Outside of his family his great love in life was hurling. He played for some years for the Wicklow Senior team and played club hurling for Forestry College, Avondale and Newcastle.
He had a lean time on the county team and won few awards, mainly because they were grouped with strong hurling counties like Limerick, Offaly, Laois, Antrim and Westmeath at the time.
He was on the 'Dales team that won the SHC in 1983, along with another famous Kilkenny man Dessie Heffernan.
In recent years, when his health was failing he said to his hurling friends that he would hang on for the 'four in a row'. He never missed a Kilkenny match in Croke Park and was there to see his nephew Derek Lyng help the 'Cats' to that famous fourth.
The Avondale club provided a guard of honour from their own clubhouse to his final resting place in Rathdrum cemetery. The Lions Club of which he was a member provided the guard of honour when he was removed the Kilcoole Church for Requiem Mass. We extend our sympathy to his wife Elizabeth, sons Darren and Ronan and extended family.
May he rest in peace.
