The Late Annie May O'Neill

The community of Tinahely was saddened to hear of the passing of Annie May O'Neill of School Road, Tinahely, who died at St. Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown on Thursday March 25, at the age of 86.
Annie was born on December 11, 1923, in Churchlands, Tinahely to the late James and Catherine Kinsella. She was the eldest of two daughters and is survived by her sister Lena Dillon, whom she regarded as her best friend. Indeed, it is a well-known fact that when the two girls got together, nobody was safe!
She married Michael (Mick) O'Neill of Churchlands, Tinahely on February 13, 1949 and together they had six children. From there on Annie dedicated herself to being a mother and a homemaker. She enjoyed being with people and was well known for her personality and for the fact that she never let a person leave her home without a cup of tea.
Annie's interests included gardening and reading daily papers, and she loved a game of Bingo. She was a woman who ensured that she always looked after her appearance and most people recall that they never saw her without make-up. In addition, she was a great supporter of the GAA, and regularly attended football and camogie matches when her daughter Kathleen played or referred.
Annie survived a lot of tragedy during her lifetime. Her husband Mick died in 1987 at a young age. The tragic death of her grandson Ciaran in 2002 and the death of her daughter Kathleen in 2006 following a battle with cancer proved testament to Annie's strong will and her devotion to her religion which provided her with a great sense of comfort during these very difficult times.
Annie had been in poor health for a number of years and despite the paint that she was in she never complained. She went through life with a never-failing smile on her face. She was a resident at St. Colman's Hospital, Rathdrum, and fondly referred to the as her 'home'. She enjoyed returning there after spending the weekend with her family and counted May Kavanagh, the nurses and the staff members as her friends.
Annie's funeral mass took place in St. Kevin's Church, Kilaveney and she was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. She will be sadly and dearly missed by her sons James (Sheamie) and Kevin, her daughters Marie (Whelan), her sister Lena Dillon, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her extended family. May she rest in peace
