The Late Michael (Mick) Dunne

Michael (Mick) Dunne was a kind hearted man who loved young and old.
The 79 year old of furlongstown, Taghmon passed away on February 28 in his home, surrounded by his family, following an illness.
Mick was born in Poulmarle, Taghmon on August 29, 1930. The youngest of six children and with a farming upbringing, he was always headed in the direction of working the land.
He started working with Willie Carroll in 1942 where he served his time farming and when he got a bit older he followed a trashing set. In 1958 he returned home and began to work with this uncle in Furlongstown.
He moved to Furlongstown in 1963 and he began to set up a life and a business. This was where he spent the rest of his days with his wife Eileen, and sons John, Martin, Michael and the late Alan.
He married the love of his life Eileen on January 29, 1963 and they recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. He lived for his family, be it his wife or children, brothers or sisters.
He always had time to chat with them and he continued this trait with his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy and he always had time to tell them yarns of times gone by. He could spend time with any age group and was able to talk to them on any topic.
A man ahead of his time, Mick embraced the changes in farming with enthusiasm. Never a man to shy away from change or hard work, he started out as a dairy farmer and broke into the hire work business. He was at his happiest when he was out in the land ploughing or cutting silage and this was the case right up until the time he fell ill. He enjoyed not only this side of farming but also enjoyed walking the land and tending to the animals around him. He was a true gentleman and this shone through.
Mick was also known all over country from his time drawing square bales throughout. He thoroughly enjoyed his time spent out on the land and always had fond stories to tell about the adventures he had and his many chats with people all over the country.
He played football and hurling in late 40s and 50s and the early 60s. He started out playing with Tomcoole. The four parish teams merged and they formed the St. Munn's team and it was from here they flourished under the guidance of Fr. Byrne. Mick won his first county junior final in 1954 and then in 1955, 1957 and 1958. St Munns went on to create their own little piece of history by winning three senior titles- a mean feat by anyone's standards. He was a vital part of those teams with his style and flair shining from the half-back line. He won numerous awards for his contribution to that historic team to win a county final. In later life his interest in the GAA never dwindled. He often travelled to county and club matches both at adult and underage level.
He played 45 all over the county with the usual spots of Breen's of the Dirr, Duncormick and Taghmon being visited on a regular basis. There would be a bit of money on the table but he always played for the enjoyment above all else.
Mick loved people and never had a bad word to say about anyone. This was reflected in the numerous visitors he had and the time people spent with him while he was sick. He brought a smile to many a face and had a great attitude and outlook on life. He was one of a kind and will be very sadly missed.
His removal and Requiem Mass took place in Taghmon Church on March 1 and Tuesday 2 respectively, where a guard of honour was provided by Taghmon Camross GAA club. He was laid to rest in St. Fintan's Cemetery, Taghmon.
Mick is survived by his loving wife Eileen, his sons; John, Martin and Michael, daughters-in-law Deirdre, Alice and Teresa, his 12 grandchildren, brother Jack, sister Kathleen, brother-in-law Jimmy, sister-in-law Claire, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends
