The Late Bernard McHugh Many people were saddened by the recent death of Bernard McHugh (78) of Orristown, Killinick, who passed away on Sunday April 19. A son of Luke and Catherine, Bernie, as his family and friends knew him, grew up in Rosslare Harbour with his sisters Marie, Bridie, Frances and Betty, and brother Gerald. He helped with the family hackney business before going onto work at Rosslare Harbour, spending his career with British Rail. After his retirement from British Rail, Bernie, typically, couldn't stay still, and continued to working with Boland's in Wexford until latter years. Dedicated to his work, Bernie was a great colleague, a trustworthy employee and a friend to all who knew him. After marrying Betty, his beloved wife, they made their home in Orristown, Killinick, where they spent their life happily together, raising their loving son and daughter, Majella and Liam. The couple also had many wonderful friends and neighbours. Those who knew Bernie recognised him as a man who was strong, faithful and true. He was a devoted husband and father and loved to spend all his spare time with the family and neighbours. He appreciated the real, true qualities of life. In his early years he played with local GAA Club, St. Mary's Rosslare and made many great friends during his playing days. He retained his love of sport throughout his life, always supporting his local teams, and he loved nothing more than listening to any match involving Wexford on the radio at full volume. Bernie never forgot his family roots and several times every year he made the long journey to his father's home village of Finea, Co. Westmeath, where he was totally relaxed at ease with everyone. While there he loved to indulge in is favourite pastime, fishing on the River Inny behind his uncle Brian's farm and he also spent several long nights on the wonderful Lough Sheelin with his cousins, fishing for trout and pike. Bernie really appreciated the natural countryside and wildlife, he spent many happy evenings in his garden or walking down the lane beside his house, generally at dusk with the dog, who was a great companion of his. He loved to go to the beach at Rosdoonstown, Ballytrent and St. Helen's rambling through the dunes while keeping a close look out for washed up treasures or just searching for his runaway dogs! Bernie's Requiem Mass took place at St. Martin's Church, Piercestown on Tuesday April 21. He was laid to rest in Piercestown Cemetery. He is predeceased by his sister Marie. He is survived by his loving wife Betty, his daughter Majella, son Liam, his sisters, Bridie, Frances and Betty, his brother Gerald, son-in-law Pat, his extended family and many friends.
