Murphy, Leo

The late Leo Murphy Many people in Wexford and Rosslare were saddened by the recent death of Leo Murphy. Having retired as Bank Manager from the AIB in Wicklow, Leo and his wife Carmel settled in Rosslare Strand in 1993. Family always came first for Leo, who is survived by his loving wife and their five children; sons James, Tim and Leo, and daughters Paula and Sinead. Leo, a Cork native maintained his passion for sport following his retirement. He actively encouraged the participation of young people in sport through his involvement with rounders in Rosslare and he trained many teams from the local schools who competed in Community Games finals. In his youth Leo was a fine athlete and hurler, winning a Junior county medal in his early 50s with his local team Tracton in Co Cork. However, after retiring to Wexford he had divided loyalties as he became a keen supporter of the Wexford hurlers as well. Leo was also an avid outdoors person and enjoyed many long summer evenings mackerel fishing off the rocks in Fethard-on-Sea. Leo and his devoted wife Carmel were inseparable for 40 years of marriage. He was also very devoted to and proud of his children and grandchildren. His brother Monsignor Declan Murphy, celebrated his Requiem Mass in Rosslare Strand and in his homily paid a glowing tribute to Leo, whom he described as a man of 'strong christian faith, a devoted husband to Carmel and a true family man.' Other clergy in attendance were Fr Eoin Murphy, another brother of Leo's, Fr James Murphy, CC, Rosslare, and Fr John O'Gorman from Co Galway. Leo is deeply regretted and will be sadly missed, by his loving wife Carmel, his five children, his grandchildren, son-in-law, extended family and wide circle of friends. - Wexford People, 6th August 2008
