Clann Gaels excel as ever
February 28, 2006
While no major honours were achieved in 2005, Clann Gaels fielded at all levels.
The highlights of our year were when our adult team competed in the Intermediate Final, and our U12 team reached the A semi-final.
Our U14, 16s and minors reached the final stages of their respective competitions and gave a good account of themselves.
Intermediate Team
This team performed well during the year. They took part in the league and had a number of very competitive games, most notably against Coralstown Kinnegad and Tyrrellspass. They also defeated Shamrocks in the semi-final of the championship.
Despite coming up against a well prepared Kilbeggan side in the final the girls performed well, and never gave up until the final whistle. The future looks bright for the team in 2006.
Minor team
Our minor team came up against strong competition in their championship, recording defeats against Lomans, Milltown and Rochfortbridge. They reached the B semi-final against Garycastle. This game was played in Milltown, whilst the Clann Gaels girls played some excellent football the strength of the opposition proved too great.
Under 16 talent
Our Under 16 team failed to build on the achievements of the previous year and played a large number of their games throughout the season under strength. There is great potential in this team for 2006 but a more dedicated approach to training is required to achieve this.
Under 14 team
The Under 14 championship reached its final stages quite early in the season and unfortunately our team exited the championship in the middle of July. We played our quarter final game against Athlone in Tyrrellspass and our depleted side put up a gallant effort against a strong Athlone team but to no avail.
Under 12 team
Our Under 12 team enjoyed an excellent season being defeated in just one of their eleven championship matches. In our semi-final we played St. Loman's in Clonkill. Both sets of players had to contend with very windy conditions. Clann Gaels led for forty five of the fifty minutes but lost their way in that vital last five minute period when a number of goals in quick succession turned the scoreline around in favour of St Loman's. Our hope for the future would be for this team to stay together as there is winning potential in this side.
Our club was well represented on all county teams in 2005. Well done to those girls on their achievements.
