A last-gasp point in injury time by Daniel Carty earned long-time leaders Lough Lene Gaels a deserved share of the spoils (1-8 to 0-11) with Castlepollard in an entertaining Westmeath SHC final at Mullingar. Carty's 32nd minute leveller was no more than the Gaels deserved as they had played the best hurling on the day and managed to restrict their opponents to just two points from play. In front of almost 4,000 fans, the game was a lively affair throughout but really ignited in the final quarter when the spoils dangled tantalisingly in front of the combatants. Inspired by a five star display by full-back Martin Williams and Killian Cosgrove up front, the Gaels were well worth their 0-7 to 0-5 interval advantage. But Castlepollard rolled up their sleeves and a goal three minutes from time by Sean McLoughlin looked to have nicked the cup for the town team. However the Gaels burst forward with a great will to win in the dying minutes and justice was done when Carty fired over a superb point from near the sideline.
