Westmeath's Shane Deering
NAME: Shane Deering
DATE OF BIRTH: 18-5-78
HEIGHT: 5' 9"
WEIGHT: 11st
CLUB: The Downs
COUNTY: Westmeath
NOTABLE SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS (GAELIC): The match winning tackle (so I'm told) in the All-Ireland Final
OTHER: Getting selected to play for Leinster schools team in rugby this year
INTER-COUNTY DEBUT: Under 16 against Longford
TOUGHEST OPPONENT: Aaron McCarthy. A lion-hearted defender who plays for our rival club St. Lomans, Mullingar
FAVOURITE GROUNDS: Croke Park and Lansdowne Road
HOBBIES: Soccer, rugby, gaelic and a few social pints after each
FAVOURITE POSITION: Left half back
FAVOURITE PLAYERS: Paul Curran and David Beggy
INFLUENCES ON YOUR CAREER: Obviously my father Seamus (a former Irish international rugby star), who passed away seven years ago, and my team mates on the Westmeath team
THE HIGH POINT OF YOUR CAREER TO DATE: Winning the All-Ireland without a doubt
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: I've lost many club finals but I'd trade them all in again for the All-Ireland. I've been very lucky in sport
OTHER PLAYERS WITH A PROMISING FUTURE: Thomas Cleary - a team mate of mine both at club and county level. Probably one of the best players I've ever played with
DO YOU HAVE ANY RELATIVES INVOLVED IN GAELIC GAMES?: My brother Darragh who plays senior football alongside myself for The Downs. Darragh also played for the Westmeath Minors when eligible
PERSON YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO MEET: Muhammed Ali, who I think is probably the biggest legend of all time. I would have loved to have met him in his hay day
FAVOURITE PERSONAL SAYING OTHER OF ABUSE: 'No hassle in the castle'
PET HATES: Having no money for pints. Just being known as Shane Deering and not son of Seamus Deering. I'd like to be known for my own sporting achievements
IDEAL DATE: Apart from my girlfriend Lorna Nugent, who was very supportive of me through the All-Ireland campaign, Sharon Stone for obvious reasons
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED: A person who was always true to his word. A person who always looked out for his friends and a good footballer who always gave 100%
