Clonkill bridge 32-year gap
September 17, 2001
Clonkill......2-11
Cullion..........2-5
Clonkill were crowned Westmeath senior hurling champions for the first time since 1969 following a deserved success over fellow-parishioners Cullion at Cusack Park, Mullingar yesterday (September 16).
The Loughegar-based outfit laid the foundations for victory in the opening nine minutes when Paddy Dowdall and Enda Loughlin both found the net. Cullion, who were appearing in their first final, battled back with goals from Declan Gillen and Frank Shaw.
However, some poor finishing meant that they never threatened to upset the pre-match favourites who had outstanding performers in Andrw Mitchell at centre back and Roscommon county player Colm Kelly at midfield.
The minor final was won by St. Oliver Plunkett's who defeated Derrevaragh Gaels (Castlepollard/Ringtown) by 1-11 to 1-6.
