Southern Gaels Hurling notes

January 23, 2017

New Intermediate Manager Appointed

John Benton, a former Southern Gaels player himself, has been appointed manager of the Intermediate team for 2017. With a long list of coaching credentials at both club and county level, John is a great addition to the club and it is expected that he will have an immediate impact on the squad. Working and living locally, John hopes to start working with players shortly to build on their form in recent years which has seen a strong team built up. The Under 21 team that competed for county honours two years ago, are all at senior level now and form the backbone of the Intermediates giving them a platform to develop further during the forthcoming season. The players have reacted very favourable to the appointment and are eager to start working with John shortly.

New format to Intermediate Championship

Southern Gaels Intermediates will participate in a revised championship structure agreed at county level recently. Teams involved have been broken into two groups from which four teams will emerge to take part in semi-finals. Gaels have been placed in the same group as Crookedwood, Turin, Fr. Dalton's, Cullion and Rington. The top three from this will will join the winner of the other group, including Clonkill, Raharney and Castletown Geoghane in the semis. This revised structure gives Gaels a strong chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. The group games are provisionally booked for July and August depending on how the county team performs this summer. League games are set to start at the end of February.

"Rise Up and Hurl" Continues

The only official hurling taking place in the club at the moment is the 9-10pm Tuesday night "Rise Up and Hurl" session for the Masters. The numbers for this keep growing with three new additions this week when 16 players lined out at the Regional Sports Centre. This is a great hurling session for those not ready to hang up their boots yet or for those wishing to blow the dust off the ash and relive some of the glory days of old. All are welcome - just turn up on the night.

First Committee Meeting of 2017

As with most clubs, the off-season gives the opportunity for some of the administration work central to the organisation to be started and it was a busy start for the Southern Gaels committee which met last Wednesday night. First item on the agenda was, of course, the appointment of John Benton as the new Intermediate manager. Other items saw the committee lay out plans for the forthcoming year including the schedule for Juvenile training both indoor and outdoor, the appointment of mentors for each of the levels and a timetable for club events such as registration.
