Westmeath GAA Notes by Aidan Walsh (County PRO)
Westmeath Win comfortably over Carlow:
Cusack park was the venue on Sunday for the first home Leinster Senior football championship game since 1999 when Westmeath had a comfortable 3-15 to 1-10 victory over a game Carlow side. Going into Sundays match, Westmeath were hot favourites to overcome Carlow and while favouritism doesn't always sit well on Westmeath teams shoulders, the pundits were correct in their assessment of this game.
As predicted Westmeath set up a Leinster Senior Football quarter-final tilt at Dublin after having 11 points to spare over Carlow .
Westmeath were in control right from the throw-in with a brace of points from Dessie Dolan and Denis Glennon eased the home team into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead. Sean Gannon got Carlow back on level terms with the game's first goal after latching onto a long delivery from Brendan Murphy but points from Des Dolan and a John Heslin free put the Lake County 0-5 to 1-0 ahead after 18th minutes. Pat Flanagan's team were far too strong for the visitors and the game was effective decided at halftime when they enjoyed a commanding a 2-8 to 1-3 lead with both goals coming from the boot of Kieran Martin.
The second half saw Carlow stage a mini revival with the opening two points of the second half but
when James Dolan netted the home teams third goal midway through the half, it completely settled matters.
Both teams emptied their benches during the last 15 minutes and while scores were equally spread over that period, there was little drama as the result had been long decided.
As a consequence of this win Westmeath's will play against defending champions Dublin on Saturday, June 1st at Croke Park in the Leinster Quarter final while Carlow will await the qualifiers in a few weeks time.
The result was certainly deserved on the day and Westmeath will enter their encounter with Dublin in confident manner having got over this opening game. Dublin will certainly be strong favourites in two weeks time but that wont bother Westmeath. In 2004, we met them at the same stage and won and for long periods in 2008 looked like repeating the feat. It is certainly something to relish and we will preview the game in detail next week.
