O'Loughlin, Michael

September 01, 2012
The local community in Drum is in mourning this week after the passing of popular local man Michael O'Loughlin.

A father of four, Mr O'Loughlin (46) died on Monday after bravely battling motor neurone disease in recent years. He was a former employee of Elan in Athlone and a long time member of Clann na nGael Gaa club where he played both at underage and adult level and also coached girls' teams. A friend and former work colleague, Padraig Naughton, yesterday described Mr O'Loughlin as "a very genuine and down-to-earth person …nobody had anything but respect and admiration for him". His illness resulted in a charity cycle being organised in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association last year.

A large number of people cycled from Croke Park to Clann na nGael club and their efforts raised some €52,000 for the cause. "The huge response to that cycle was testament to how popular he was", said Mr. Naughton. The deceased is survived by his wife Caroline, daughters Sarah, Anna, Hazel and Olive, parents Jack and Mary, sisters Patricia and Deirdre, brothers Shane and Rory, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. The funeral Mass is due to take place in St. Brigid's Church at 2pm today, with burial afterwards in Drum cemetery.
