Collins opposed to 'square ball' rule change

May 10, 2012
Former All-Ireland referee Paddy Collins has warned of players "parking" themselves in the square after the 'square ball' rule was recently amended.

Under the new rule, which will come into effect next week, the attacking player (in open play) is allowed to enter the small rectangle before the ball is delivered. From set play - frees, sidelines or '45s - the old square ball rule still applies.

Collins, who took charge of four All-Ireland football finals in the 1970s and 1980s, and is considered by many to be the greatest Gaelic football referee of all time, told a recent Westmeath county board meeting: "I don't think it's the answer to all our ills. It has been sold very well, but I think it could cause great problems for referees.

"These are all very important decisions. There have been a few high-profile decisions in recent years, but hard cases make bad laws."
